Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence and computer science that focuses on using data and algorithms to imitate the way that humans learn. Recently, researchers have utilized this technology to help improve hearing aids.
Improving Hearing Aid Algorithms
Hearing aid algorithms have been used to improve hearing in different environments. But even with their use, hearing aids can still struggle to separate human speech from background noise.
Another issue facing hearing aid algorithms is that current testing methods to gauge their effectiveness are costly and time-consuming. They also struggle to account for different listening environments and different degrees of hearing loss.
However, a study out of Germany produced promising results by developing a human speech recognition model based on deep machine learning.
The Experiment
These researchers trained their algorithm by using recordings of basic sentences from male and female speakers. They then masked the speech using eight different noise signals to mimic things like background noise or another person talking over the speaker. They also degraded the recordings to different degrees to try and match how they would sound to people with varying degrees of hearing loss.
They played these recordings for participants with normal hearing and those with hearing loss. Their model was found to be quite precise in predicting speech recognition for different hearing abilities in different environments, with an error of just two decibels (dB).
These types of results offer promise that hearing aid algorithms will continue to improve and offer the best personalized listening options possible.
Why Speech Recognition is Important for People with Hearing Loss
When you have hearing loss, your brain must work harder to understand speech. This extra work can lead to frustration and mental fatigue. It makes activities that used to be fun, like catching up with friends at Sidekick Coffee, feel overwhelming. Many people with hearing loss begin to isolate themselves from others because socializing becomes too difficult.
Not only can this put a strain on your relationship with others, but it can also negatively affect your physical, mental and cognitive health.
