Did you know that approximately 15% of American adults report some trouble with their hearing?
If you are one of the millions of people who treat your hearing loss with hearing aids, one of the most important things to know is how to take care of your device to ensure the best listening experience.
Summer can provide some additional challenges when caring for your hearing aids. Let’s examine a few ways you can give your device a little extra love and care.
Storing Your Hearing Aids

It’s always important to store your hearing aids in a cool, dry place, but it’s perhaps even more important during the hot and humid summer months. Avoid leaving them in a car or anywhere exposed to direct sunlight, and keep them in a safe spot while you sleep at night.
Avoid Water Exposure
Who doesn’t love taking a trip to the coast during the summer or a quick visit to Cottage Lake Swimming Pool? While taking a dip is a great way to beat the summer heat, it isn’t safe for your hearing aids.
If you decide to go for a swim, take them out and put them in a waterproof case away from the water beforehand. It’s also important to dry your ears before putting your hearing aids back on to avoid moisture getting on your device.
Be Careful When Wearing Sunscreen or Insect Repellent
It’s important to keep your skin safe from harmful sun rays and avoid pesky bug bites while enjoying the outdoors. However, they can impact your hearing aid’s performance by clogging the microphone and receivers, making it harder to hear.
To prevent this, apply lotion or sprays before you put your hearing aids in, then allow enough time to dry and wash your hands before inserting your hearing aids.
Travel With Your Hearing Accessories
Many of us travel during the summer. If you have hearing loss, it’s important to bring any needed hearing accessories with you on your trip. In addition to your hearing aids, this may mean batteries or your charger, a drying box or other storage case and cleaning tools like a soft cloth or brush to keep your device working well as you enjoy a new area.
Need a Hearing Checkup This Summer?
